Dosage Index vs Beyer Speed Figs

I guess some could accuse me of looking down the road too early but I still like the idea of looking at the two-year-olds and wondering who will still be contenders on the first Saturday in May. I found an article that was pretty interesting and thought I would share it.

New Tools

This post is so over due, however it seems like a good time to talk about some of the new tools that are available to us. The DRF has the new Ticket Maker. This new tool that Steve Crist created based on his methods that he originally wrote about in his book Exotic Waging. It is how he builds multiple tickets for either the pick 4 or the pick 6. I played with it when he first released it and it seemed to get the job done. Once you have rated your horses its pretty simple. You will not need a college degree to use it and it certainly does what its supposed to do.

-Moss pace Figs and his new blog are featured on the DRF home page. Moss has stated he is trying to tackle the synthetic tracks and has made some progress in this area. It appears he is available to his users who have questions about his figs via his new blog. I have not used these figs only because I subscribe to a full service software company that offers figs based on a different methodology. If your not currently not using pace figs these seem to be a great source to start with or if you make your own it may save you some time.

-Steve Davidowitz has updated his book BETTING THOROUGHBREDS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for some new information and an over all book covering handicapping for 2009. He covers so many topics and does a great job with up to date information.

-Dan Illman's Trip Handicapping DVD is not brand new but it is on sale at the DRF website till the end of the month. If you have not seen this it will improve the way you watch your replays, and live racing. He goes into what you should be searching for whether it be a dream trip or traffic trouble,Dan covers what you might have missed with out a trained eye.

How Many Lanuages Do You Speak

With the Derby Galloping towards us at increasing speed, there is plenty of news to monitor ... the preps are over ... the earning totaled ... feet examined ... whose on the injured list ... whose being highlighted on TVG's The Works and every expert has created their own list of contenders ... .

I thought it might be helpful for a reminder in some basic fundamentals when it comes to making your selections on the first Saturday in May.

First I must admit that I have been guilty of this many times in the past. I get so caught up in crunching my numbers such as turn times ... ability times ... pars ... pace figs ... track variants ... and looking for value that I forget to examine the actual horse in the paddock and post parade.

I gave myself a refresher course on body language recently and just paying attention to this factor I hit 4 of my 5 bets this past weekend at Gulfstream Park. I hit at 80% the week before.

The one thing that stood out to me was how many Favorites I was able to just throw out completely after viewing them in the paddock and post parade.
It also saved me a few bets on Horses that I had identified the night before that stood out on paper but did not look the part on race day.

One of the leading authority on this topic is Joe Takach. Joe has been around the game forever and he has a nice web site full of information relating to this topic. One of Joe's most popular DVDs is his Beat The Beam where he shows the viewer how to find the right horse via the http://www.joe-takach.com/OTB or your home computer depending how you play. So before you make your next bet remember to take that extra time to observe your selection and see if he looks ready to race today.

Mark Cramer's Tribute to Howard Sartin on HANA

After reading Mark Cramer's post on HANA I felt inspired to write a long overdue post of my own. I'm a little too young to have been subjected to Howard Sartin and Tom Ainslie and some of the other greats in their glory days of real time horse playing. However I have read everything I could get my hands on by these Masters.

-I think the one that influenced me the most in relationship to the Sartin Methodology was Tom Brohamer's Modern Pace Handicapping. I added Brohamer's methods as one of my fundamentals tools in handicapping a race.

-In reading Mark Cramers post on Monday (see "The Music Man: A Tribute to Howard Sartin at http://blog.horseplayersassociation.org/ ) I realized that maybe I am lucky not to have been around in Sartins hey day because I then would only use his system for play.

-I enjoy reading every book on the topic and trying to take what I think is best and adding everything together and making my own system of play.

-Mr. Crammer caused me to have another thought about this topic, that is with Tom Ansilie dead, Howard Sartin gone, and others that I consider to be Racing Elders (I mean that in the best way possible) reaching there golden years, my question is do we have any up and coming personalities to replace these great men who made what I do possible? Without the teachings of Dick Mitchell and those previously mentioned greats my job would have been much more difficult.

Balance is Key

A GOOD MIXTURE IS 70 PERCENT FAITH AND 30 PERCENT SCIENCE. FAITH IN THE ART OF PEACE WILL ALLOW YOU TO UNDERSTAND THE INTRICACIES OF MODERN SCIENCE.

MORIHEI UESHIBA
-Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969) is renowned as one of the greatest Martial Artists of all time. He is the founder of Aikido. A great prophet he is the author of the ART OF PEACE.
-One of my greatest lessons from Aikido … is to be in balance in all areas of life. I’m the first to admit this isn’t always easy to attain. Especially after a frustrating day at the track. One of those days where it seems that you would need to bet every horse in the field just to cash a ticket.
-Balance means having a good set of fundamentals to depend on. In all things balance begins with attitude and preparation. Successful betting requires a winning attitude, sound fundamentals, and the belief in oneself. Possibilities become possible when we remove limits. Education, preparation and sound money management skills provide opportunities. A winning attitude is not shattered by a losing day. Success is measured yearly by the man, not daily by the score.
